About this role

Shape the Future of Heart Failure Research at Tufts:

The Tufts University-Tufts Medicine (TU-TM) Research Enterprise is seeking to recruit multiple faculty to Tufts University School of Medicine and the CardioVascular Center at Tufts Medicine to contribute to a highly collaborative translational research ecosystem focused on heart failure. This cluster hire initiative seeks to recruit a collaborative cohort of two or more academic clinician-investigators and research scientists dedicated to advancing our understanding of heart failure. We welcome expertise across a broad methodological spectrum, including fundamental biology, translational research, clinical investigation, population health, epidemiology, and artificial intelligence. We anticipate independent applications, but candidates may also nominate potential co-investigators, or submit a joint application as an established multidisciplinary team. The goal is to expand on the collaborative research ecosystem at Tufts that is advancing the understanding and treatment of heart failure leading to improvements in care and outcomes.

This opportunity is part of the Tufts University–Tufts Medicine (TU-TM) Research Enterprise Cardiovascular and Critical Care initiative. This ambitious investment aims to build on the existing strengths of: the Tufts Medicine CardioVascular Center Advanced Heart Failure clinical program, which leads the region in advanced heart failure care and heart transplant volume (60-70 heart transplants annually); the Tufts Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, a world renowned basic science Institute focused on basic cardiovascular research; and strengths at Tufts University School of Medicine in the departments of Immunology, Public Health, and Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology. The vision is to build a national center of excellence in multidisciplinary heart failure research, spanning fundamental biology, translational discovery, clinical trials and outcomes research.

Tufts University–Tufts Medicine Research Enterprise:

The TU-TM Research Enterprise represents a transformative partnership between Tufts University and the Tufts Medicine Health System designed to build collaborative, multidisciplinary research programs that improve human health. The overall vision is to invest in research programs where Tufts can be first, best, and unique—developing areas of national leadership that distinguish our institution through innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence. Cardiovascular Diseases and Critical Care is one of five strategic research pillars of the Research Enterprise, established to accelerate discovery through collaboration among investigators across: basic cardiac and vascular biology, cardiovascular and critical care medicine, cardiac and vascular surgery, engineering, public health, nutrition, genetics, immunology, and computational sciences, among others. There are currently over 150 faculty representing 8 Tufts University schools and clinician-researchers from across multiple Departments within the Tufts Medicine health system participating in the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pillar.

Faculty recruited through this initiative will become part of a growing interdisciplinary community committed to solving the most challenging problems leading to advances in health of patients with heart failure across the lifespan.

Why Tufts:

  • Tufts School of Medicine, located on the Tufts University Boston campus, is immediately adjacent to Tufts Medical Center, the Academic Medical Center for the Tufts Medicine health system and the primary teaching hospital of Tufts School of Medicine. Co-located on the Boston campus is the Tufts Freidman School of Nutrition, the only Nutrition school in the nation, the Tufts Dental School, and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. The TU-TM Research Enterprise connects this vibrant Boston research campus and is highly integrated with investigators at the Tufts Medford campus in the Schools of Engineering and Arts and Sciences, and with the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine on the Grafton Campus.
  • Tufts Medicine has a fully integrated, high volume, academically oriented CardioVascular Center, renowned for heart failure care including sub-specialty clinics in inherited and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, cardio-oncology, cardio-obstetrics and inflammatory cardiomyopathy. It is one of the largest advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant program in the northeastern United States.
  • A robust cardiovascular biobank and tissue repository.
  • Molecular Cardiology Research Institute: comprised of 12 laboratories with more than 50 staff, spanning cellular to in vivo studies of mechanisms of cardiac and vascular diseases; several laboratories focused on basic mechanisms of cardiac remodeling and failure; robust core labs including a small animal physiology core lab, cell culture core lab, vascular function core lab, and confocal microscopy lab, all staffed with expert technologists.
  • A large animal surgical laboratory focused on advanced cardiac hemodynamics, cardiovascular device research and development, and cardiogenic shock and recovery.
  • A collegial and collaborative culture that values curiosity, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Strong institutional commitment from Tufts University and Tufts Medicine to support research growth.
  • Strong infrastructure to support multidisciplinary collaboration across Tufts University and Tufts Medicine.
  • Access to diverse clinical populations and robust clinical research infrastructure to recruit patients across the academic and community hospitals that make up the Tufts Medicine health system.
  • Close partnerships with leaders in clinical and molecular cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery, critical care, immunology, engineering, public health, nutrition, drug and device development, data science, and basic science departments.
  • Opportunities to mentor outstanding undergraduate, medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty.
  • Competitive start-up and recruitment support commensurate with experience.
  • Robust Tufts University core facilities, Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) shared research and education infrastructure, flourishing graduate and medical education, structured mentorship and support for all faculty.
  • Academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending on qualifications.
  • For applicable candidates, potential cardiovascular research leadership opportunities are available within Tufts Medicine.

Tufts University and Tufts Medicine are committed to creating an environment where investigators from diverse backgrounds and disciplines work together to advance understanding and care for people suffering with heart failure. Faculty may be appointed in any of our basic science departments, clinical departments, or research institutes.

Successful Candidates will:

  • Hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree.
  • Be a collaborative leader who values partnership, mentorship, and team science
  • Have a record of research success with a strong record of extramural funding and scholarly productivity in heart failure, which could range from fundamental and translational science to clinical and population research
  • Be passionate about building collaborative research environments that accelerate scientific discovery
