Description of Gleeson Laboratory: Research efforts include the high-temperature degradation behavior of metallic alloys and coatings; phase equilibria and transformations; physical metallurgy, and diffusion and thermodynamic treatments of both gas/solid and solid/solid interactions. Emphasis is placed on understanding the thermodynamic an kinetic factors affecting material-corrodent interactions. The research generally involves a combination of materials processing, characterization, and testing.
Required Educational Background: Applicant must have a Ph.D. in materials engineering or a closely-related field. Research experience in materials characterization is essential.
Required Skillset: For the research component of the position, the required skillset includes: a strong background in materials characterization and synthesis, basic thermodynamics and kinetics, and technical publications. In addition to conducting research, your duties may also include preparing reports, performing literature reviews, supervising graduate and undergraduate students, and assisting with other projects in the laboratory. Other required skill sets include x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and property measurements coupled with a strong interest in basic and applied research. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team structure delivering project components on given time schedules; Ability to multi-task.
Responsibilities: The research-related responsibilities of this position will include mentoring graduate students, writing journal publications, preparing reports that summarize the work conducted for progress reports to funding agencies, planning, developing, and implementing technical and scientific research programs; contributing to proposal writing and acquisition of preliminary data.
